‘Supergirl’ Movie In The Works At DC And Warner Brothers
DC and Warner Brothers have announced their plans to produce a new Supergirl movie. This is the first time that the heroine will return to the big screen since the 1984 film starring Helen Slater. Deadline reports that Oren Uziel (The Cloverfield Paradox, 22 Jump Street) is writing the script, but no director or producer have been confirmed yet.

Supergirl, also known as Kara Zor-El, is the cousin of Superman and another survivor of the destroyed planet Krypton. She first appeared in comics in 1959 and has had a few different mythologies as her story has been rebooted throughout the decades. The 1984 film received mostly negative reviews — with a score of 10% on Rotten Tomatoes — although many critics praised Slater’s performance. In 2015, a Supergirl TV series, starring Melissa Benoist as Kara, premiered on CBS before moving to the CW for its second and subsequent seasons. The series, which is part of the Arrowverse, has garnered mostly positive reviews and is set to enter its fourth season in October 2018.
The DC Extended Universe has had mixed success with films in recent years with high critical praise for Wonder Woman, but lackluster reviews for Justice League. The Man of Steel films along with Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice have been criticized as being too gritty and dark to be truly fun. Wonder Woman, on the other hand, was praised for its optimism. Perhaps DC is looking to have Supergirl become another hopeful addition to the DCEU.

Following the success of Patty Jenkins‘ Wonder Woman, DC has been adding more female-led and female-directed films to its registrar. The news about Supergirl follows announcements for Wonder Woman 1984, Birds of Prey, New Gods and a Batgirl movie, all stories with a female protagonist. Cathy Yan will be directing Birds of Prey and Ava DuVernay has been hired to direct New Gods, making them the first women of color to direct a superhero film.
