Jimmy Buffett’s Wife Sues Accountant Over $250M Margaritaville Estate After She Gets Just 1% Return On His Assets
Jane Buffett has filed a lawsuit against her late husband Jimmy Buffett’s accountant amid a dispute over the handling of his $275 million estate.
Upon the death of her husband, Jane was set to receive most of Jimmy’s assets, but Rick Mozenter, Jimmy’s accountant, allegedly withheld that information from her for a year. She later discovered that she would be receiving roughly $2 million out of $275 million in assets from the estate.
Since then, Jane has accused Mozenter of mismanaging the trust and has threatened to sue. In turn, Mozenter told her to create her own assets or “consider adjustments” to her lifestyle rather than receiving more funds from her husband’s trust.
Jimmy was a world-renowned rock singer, best known for his hit song, “Margaritaville,” which has also been trademarked as a hospitality and restaurant service, generating $14 million in revenue over the past 18 months. He is also known for creating an island-style way of life in a carefree nature. He died of Merkel Cell skin cancer in 2023.
Jane was accused by the lawyer for the trustees, Jeffery Smith, of mismanaging the estate after suggesting that it be handled by Irving Azroff, Jimmy’s lifelong music manager. Smith’s firm then sent her a massive draft of the estate’s taxes and gave her only three days to respond.
In the lawsuit, Jane also accused Mozenter’s firm of being “either not competent to administer the trust or unwilling to act in Mrs. Buffett’s best interests.” Mozenter’s firm receives $1.7 million annually to administer the estate.
Jane further alleges that Mozenter kept other properties that rightfully belonged to Jane, including properties in New York, St. Barthélemy Island and Florida.
Jane is pushing to have Mozenter removed from his position.
