Better Call Saul, the Breaking Bad spinoff focusing on lawyer Saul Goodman, will take place before, during and after Walter White’s run as a meth kingpin.

'Breaking Bad' Cameos On 'Better Call Saul'?

Instead of following a linear trajectory, Better Call Saul is going to jump between decades, which will allow it to have some cameos from Breaking Bad characters – even the ones who died along the way in the hit AMC series.

“One of the great things about having a timeline which is flexible is that perhaps some of it takes place before Breaking Bad, during Breaking Bad, and after Breaking Bad,” Better Call Saul executive producer Peter Gould told The New York Daily News. “That gives us the ability to bring back characters that were killed on Breaking Bad.”

While Gould and the rest of those behind Better Call Saul will be happy to bring Breaking Bad alums on during the new series’ run, they first and foremost envision Better Call Saul as a standalone concept. It’s not expected that the show will immediately leap to the heights of Breaking Bad, but Gould hopes it will earn a niche audience.

“We think we have a story that is worth making,” said Gould. “We could never dream of the kind of success that Breaking Bad had, and the love we got from the fans. But [with Saul] at a certain point you have to do the best job you can and tell the best story that entertains you, get a good response and hope people like it.”

Better Call Saul will star Bob Odenkirk in the titular role he’s reprising from Breaking Bad. Fellow Breaking Bad alum Jonathan Banks will also be reprising the role of Mike Ehrmantraut. Newcomers include Michael McKean, Rhea Seehorn, Patrick Fabian and Michael Mando.

Better Call Saul, which has already been renewed for a second 13-episode season, will premiere on AMC in early 2015.
