Billy Joel Diagnosed With Rare Brain Disorder, Cancels All Tour Dates Until 2026
Billy Joel, 76, is taking a break from the spotlight following his diagnosis of normal pressure hydrocephalus, which he revealed on social media. The disorder affects cognitive functioning by causing a buildup of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), which can put pressure on the brain.
His announcement went into further detail, discussing how his recent performances have caused the condition to worsen, ultimately leading to his decision to take a break. NPH is an extremely rare condition that affects only 0.2% of people between the ages of 70-80 and can lead to permanent brain damage if the CSF continues to accumulate without proper treatment.
Joel assured fans he receives “excellent care” and is “fully committed to prioritizing his health.” At this time, Joel aims to put his health first, hopefully becoming able to step back on stage in the future. All ticket buyers were refunded the full amount they paid to attend Joel’s shows later this year.
In one show last February, Joel was caught on video seemingly stumbling on stage while performing. Although he was able to catch himself and continue singing, fans began to question Joel’s well-being.
Joel’s ex, Christie Brinkley, recently revealed in her new memoir that she divorced the singer due to his binge drinking. Joel has been sober for over a decade now.
