Singer Chris Brown was released on bail of £5 million ($6.7 million) by a court in London.

In April 2023, producer Abe Diaw claimed that Brown hit him over the head with a bottle in a London nightclub two months earlier. He claimed that he was punched and kicked while on the ground. The incident took place at The Tape Club in London. Brown went to the club after performing at the O2 Arena the previous night.

Diaw said he was taken to the hospital and required crutches to walk once discharged. He said that his knee also “collapsed” and that the singer was “making out it was one of his entourage, but it was him.”

Brown reportedly suggested going to a police station for questioning. However, other reports assert that he did not meet with authorities and left for the United States.

“Two men were due to attend a police station for a voluntary interview on Wednesday, 29 March, but did not attend,” a spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police stated. “Inquiries are ongoing to locate them. There have been no arrests.”

On May 15, Brown was arrested in Manchester, England, in connection with the alleged assault. He had also been charged with grievous bodily harm with intent after the accusations that he attacked Diaw with a bottle at Tape nightclub in Mayfair. This incident was allegedly captured on CCTV and happened in a crowded venue.

After his arrest at the Lowry Hotel in Manchester, Brown appeared before Manchester Magistrates’ Court on May 16. Judge Joanne Hirst considered the charges too serious for the magistrates’ court, alluding the case to Southwark Crown Court for a hearing scheduled for June 13.

At the time, the singer was denied bail and was set to remain in custody until his next court appearance.

The victim also filed a civil lawsuit against Brown, seeking $16 million in damages for the injuries and financial losses he claims to have endured due to the incident.

Brown was soon granted bail on May 21, on the condition that he pay £4 million ($5.36 million) immediately and an additional £1 million ($1.34 million) in one week.

The singer, who had not yet been asked to enter a plea in the case, failed to appear at Southwark Crown Court, where the judge stated that he needed to pay a £5 million ($6.7 million) security fee to the court.

This financial guarantee will ensure that Brown returns to court. If he violates his bail conditions, he could be asked to forfeit the money.

As part of his bail conditions, he is also able to start his world tour on June 8 as planned.

This tour is set to start in Amsterdam next month, with stadium and arena dates in Manchester, London, Cardiff, Birmingham and Glasgow later that month and in July.

His next court date is June 20, between shows at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium and London’s Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Judge Tony Baumgartner said Brown must surrender his passport if he is not traveling on tour.

Other bail conditions include living at a particular address known to the court, not contacting the alleged victim, not visiting the Tape nightclub, and not applying for international travel documents.

The singer will appear in court next month with his co-defendant, Omololu Akinlolu, a 38-year-old who performs under the name HoodyBaby, also from America.
