Selena Gomez Hits Back At Body-Shaming Comments, Revealing Her Struggle With Intestinal Disorder
Selena Gomez clapped back at online trolls who body-shamed her during her red carpet appearance for Emilia Pérez by detailing her struggle with an intestinal bacterial overgrowth.
Gomez, 32, walked the red carpet at the American French Film Festival, showcasing a tight, long-sleeve black cocktail dress paired with stilettos.
The actress posed for photographers with her hand covering her stomach in numerous photos, causing TikTok users to comment on her appearance in a since-deleted post.
“This makes me sick,” Gomez wrote in the comments below her video. “I have SEBO in my small intestine. It flares up. I don’t care that I don’t look like a sick figure. I don’t have that body. End of story. No I am NOT a victim. I’m just human.”
According to the Mayo Clinic, small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) occurs when there is an abnormal increase in the overall bacterial population in the small intestine. This growth can cause bloating, abdominal pain, malnutrition and other intolerable symptoms.
In 2013, Gomez was diagnosed with lupus and went on to receive a kidney transplant in 2017, remaining open about her ongoing health issues.
In a September interview, she revealed she cannot carry children, saying, “I unfortunately … have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy.”
The actress has remained hopeful in knowing that there are other options available to her, adding, “It made me really thankful for the other outlets for people who are dying to be moms. I’m one of those people. I’m excited for what that journey will look like, but it’ll look a little different.”
While Gomez has faced her fair-share of hardships over the years, she continues to spread positivity amid the backlash she receives.
“I just want people to know that you’re beautiful and you’re wonderful,” she said in a February 2023 video. “And yeah we have days where maybe we feel like s— but I would much rather be healthy and take care of myself, and my medications are important. I believe they are what helps me.”
Gomez was recently named on Bloomberg’s billionaire list. She responded by saying she thinks it’s distasteful to talk about money.” Gomez was recently named on Bloomberg’s billionaire list. She responded by saying she thinks it’s “distasteful to talk about money.”
