Meghan Markle Sends Gift Box Of Her New Brand’s Jams To Father-In-Law King Charles
Prince Harry’s wife, Meghan Markle, has reached out to her father-in-law, King Charles III, to send him a gift box from her new lifestyle brand, As Ever.
The gift coincides with Charles and Queen Camilla’s 20th anniversary.
Charles pointedly refused to meet with Prince Harry when he was in London last week.
UK royal correspondent Neil Sean said that Charles’ official London residence, Clarence House, had received a “sample box of delights from As Ever,” which included an array of “jams, honey, crêpe mix, and various assortments,” in addition to a handwritten note from Markle.
Sean mused that Markle’s gift was likely an attempt at “building bridges with the royal family” since she and Harry stepped back from their royal duties in 2020 and moved to the United States.
Markle’s lifestyle brand has drummed up a surplus of negative attention in tandem with the reviews of her Netflix series With Love, Meghan, which was criticized as being artificial and financially insensitive. However, the April 2 launch of As Ever saw all the products sold out in under an hour.
Royal analyst Ian Pelham Turner reflected, “I understand how [Markle] may not feel respected still, but tiny gestures like this are her way of showing compassion for what the king is going through and helping to rebuild bridges between Prince William, Prince Harry and the king…perhaps conciliatory gifts from the hostess with the mostess could shine.”
Harry has made numerous trips to the U.K. in the last few years, but Markle has not visited the Royal family since the late Queen’s funeral in September 2022.
Markle and Charles used to be extremely close, and Markle even asked Charles to walk her down the aisle to marry Harry in 2018. He acted as her mentor, educating her on royal and constitutional history. However, Charles was supposedly “deeply hurt” by Markle and Harry’s split from the Royal family, particularly Harry and Markle’s 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, in which they shared that the royal family had concerns over the mixed-race status of Markle and Harry’s children.
