In an interview with MSNBC, Rep. Jasmine Crockett (D-Texas) teared up as host Katie Phang thanked her for continually dedicating herself to supporting democracy.

On air, Phang told Crockett, “This is the second-to-last episode of the show. Congresswoman, I want to thank you for always getting up early and delivering it. But I also want to say thank you for your continuing support for democracy. It’s definitely something that you have made your brand, and it’s integrity that you’re bringing, and I’m always grateful for you.”

In a statement to X on Friday, Phang announced that her show, which began airing in 2022, had been canceled. The Katie Phang Show is among many programs cut since Rebecca Kutler, the new head of MSNBC, took charge of the liberal network a few months ago. Other hosts include Joy Reid, Hyman Mohyeldin and Jonathan Capehart.

Crockett wiped away tears and told Phang, “We’ll miss you.” Phang herself shed a few tears and responded, “Oh! You’re gonna have me crying at the beginning of a show! Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett, you haven’t seen the last of me…Thank you for being here and getting us started today.”

“I always appreciate you,” she added.

In a pointed Instagram post on Friday, Phang addressed the cancellation and drew attention to the media’s lack of representation of AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islander) people.

“I want to first thank everyone for their kindness & support,” she said. “I was stunned to hear this morning that The Katie Phang Show is being canceled. Since the show launched in 2022, the goal was to share with my viewers important conversations with brilliant guests whose insight and analysis elevated the discussion, especially with the constant breaking legal news.”

“I was proud to platform more AAPI voices than any other cable show ever. And I was, and remain, proud to have been one of the only AAPI hosts with her name on a show. Representation matters.

“I am profoundly grateful to my team, which is directly impacted by the cancellation of the show. They work tirelessly behind the scenes with an incredible level of dedication and talent. They will be at the forefront of my priorities as we work to April when the last episode of The Katie Phang Show will air.”
