Ricky Gervais Divides Fans After Mocking Sam Smith’s BRIT Outfit

Singer Sam Smith shocked viewers when they arrived at the BRIT Awards in an inflated, latex outfit. The getup inspired millions of memes and was widely discussed on TikTok and Twitter.

Like many others, comedian Ricky Gervais poked some fun at the “Unholy” singer’s outfit, which some called unsuitable for an awards show. The 61-year-old comedian photoshopped his own head onto Smith’s body on Twitter, jokingly suggesting that the singer was seeking attention when they walked the red carpet on Saturday night, tweeting, “The Worst thing about being famous is the lack of privacy. I can’t even walk down the street without people looking and pointing.”

Many of Gervais’ followers enjoyed the light-hearted tweet but some had other thoughts. Twitter users reminded the comic that Smith is in the same league as iconic stars such as David Bowie in terms of being creative with stylistic choices, especially on red carpets.

One user replied, “I must say, much as this guy isn’t my cup of tea, it doesn’t bother me what he’s up to. In fact, I only see things about him from older men who seem increasingly upset about what younger generations are doing. This stuff happened in your generation too. You do know that, grandpa?”

Some users rushed to the comedian’s defense, saying, “Yeah but Bowie was naturally cool enough to pull it off. Sam Smith just looks like they photoshopped some office clerk onto the suit.” 

Smith has recently made news by being seen in public with his new boyfriend Christian Cowan.
