Jim Gaffigan Reveals He Lost 50 Lbs. On Mounjaro, Says He Doesn’t Understand Why There’s A Stigma Around Weight-Loss Drugs
Comedian Jim Gaffigan has shared new details about his weight-loss journey and his thoughts on the public’s perception of prescribed medications.
Gaffigan revealed that when he was 270 pounds, he decided to try the medication Mounjaro. He has since lost 50 pounds. “I feel good,” he said. “I’m just grateful because it’s such a better life.”
Mounjaro, a brand name for tirzepatide, is usually used to treat type 2 diabetes. Gaffigan said that he was wary of the prescription drug at first. “I had very low expectations because I did know someone that had tried it and they were like, ‘Oh no, I was just nauseous for a week,’” he recalled. “Then I thought my true joy of eating would overpower anything.”
Gaffigan reflected on his relationship to his fluctuating weight throughout adulthood, remembering when he was younger, “[I would] work out twice a day just to be thin so I could eat… and then as my metabolism slowed down, it became harder and harder, and then my knees started giving out and then fatigue set in.”
After years of steady weight gain, Gaffigan’s doctor asked whether he was interested in trying medication; “She was like, ‘Well, some people are against it,’ and I’m like, ‘I don’t care, I’ll try it.’ My knees hurt, and my cholesterol was kind of not great.”
Gaffigan continued, “And that’s some of why I wanted to talk about it because I almost thought it was kind of off that people were resistant to talking about it. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it. There’s people walking around that obviously do not have blonde hair – yet they do. I don’t think that’s weird either. It’s just whatever gets you through.
Gaffigan’s stand-up special, aptly titled The Skinny, is set to air on Nov. 22 on Hulu. Although Gaffigan has said that the special primarily focuses on his weight-loss journey, it purportedly also offers musings on parenting. Gaffigan shares five children, ranging from ages 12 to 20, with his wife Jeannie Gaffigan.
