Christina Applegate Says MS Gives Her Pain Like ‘Knives Up My Spine’ Causing Her To ‘Scream In Bed’
On Monday, former actress Christina Applegate opened up further about her experience of Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
MS is an autoimmune disease that affects the brain and spinal cord, resulting in a wide range of symptoms, such as issues with balance, mobility and vision.
In an episode of Applegate’s MesSy podcast, co-hosted by Jaimie-Lynn Sigler, Applegate detailed the constant pain and discomfort she experienced due to the condition.
Applegate was diagnosed with MS in 2021.
Applegate and Sigler’s Monday guest, founder of The Rory Bakehouse Rory Kandel, who also suffers from MS, described the experience of her physical discomfort as “knives in [my] spine” that restricted all movement.
Kandel asked Applegate if she could relate to the feeling, to which Applegate replied, “Every single day of my life.”
Keeping up with her honest accounts of the painful disease throughout the years, Applegate said, “I lay in bed screaming… everybody has different ways of it showing up. I lay in bed screaming. Like, the sharp pains, the ache, that squeezing.”
She continued to detail the effect the autoimmune disease has had on her physical ability: “I can’t even pick up my phone sometimes, or get my remote, sometimes I can’t even hold them. I can’t open bottles now.”
In June of this year, Applegate further exposed the depths of her pain when she confessed to Sigler, “I don’t enjoy things anymore. You know, if someone can come over and lay in bed with me and talk…that’s enjoyable, I enjoy that. But, if someone’s like, ‘Let’s get up and go for a walk,’ or ‘Let’s go get a coffee,’ I don’t enjoy that process.”
At the time, Applegate assured that she was not in a suicidal state but rather coming to terms with her body’s restrictions and the reality of her new way of life.
There is currently no known cure for MS.
