Travis Kelce has acknowledged his poor performance in this season’s first three football games.

At every game Kelce played in prior seasons, he averaged 10 yards per reception. This season, he has dropped to 8.6 yards and has only caught the ball eight times in the last three games. The Chiefs have managed to win each of the previous three games, but quarterback Patrick Mahomes has thrown to Kelce less and less. A clip of Kelce sitting miserably on the bench went viral on Sunday night.

Although many have blamed Kelce’s famous girlfriend, Taylor Swift, for his apparent distraction, Kelce has officially taken a stand to insist on the reasoning for his slip-ups the last few games: “It’s football, baby!”

On the last episode of his New Heights podcast, hosted alongside his brother, retired NFL player Jason KelceKelce explained, “I’ve had a lot of catches in this league, man. I’m not worried about the catches and the yards and all of that…It has everything to do with execution, and just making sure we’re doing everything we can to win these football games is always going to be the goal. I think everyone saw my drop in the fourth quarter and the crucial third down, just trying to do too much before putting the ball away.”

He continued, “Moving forward, [I’m] still trying to make sure I can help the team out in that regard, knowing I’ve been that weapon for us in the past. Moving forward, everyone’s just tweaking their game in the right direction.”

Kelce added, “I just want to have a successful offense, and I think [Mahomes] is doing a great job of finding the open guy and making the right decisions right now, and we have to keep finding, it’s a new offense, new players, new pieces and we’re just finding how to have success throughout the season.”

Sunday night’s game was the first that Swift had missed this season, which many believed to be the reason for Kelce’s seemingly depressed state. However, it seems obvious that Swift has had no effect on Kelce’s performance in the last three games, and the blame she has received from NFL fans can most likely be attributed to old-fashioned sexism.
