In this behind-the-scenes photo from the Mission: Impossible—The Final Reckoning set, Tom Cruise went shirtless while filming one of the movie’s memorable underwater scenes. The film is the eighth installment of the American spy franchise and is a direct sequel to the seventh film, Mission: Impossible—The Dead Reckoning.

The latest movie picks up right where the characters left off. The main protagonist, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise), continues his mission to stop the antagonist Gabriel (Esai Morales) from obtaining the AI program known as “the Entity.”

The film’s runtime is an impressive 2 hours and 49 minutes, packed with intense action sequences, emotional high stakes, and Cruise’s epic repertoire of stunts.

Alongside Cruise, other returning stars include: Simon Pegg and Ving Rhames as IMF agents Benji Dunn and Luther Stickell. Hayley Atwell will return as Grace. Also returning are Vanessa Kirby (Alanna Mitsopolis), Frederick Schmidt (Zola), Shea Whigham (Jasper Briggs), Greg Tarzan Davis (Degas), Angela Bassett (Erika Sloane), and Pom Klementieff (Paris). Henry Czerny once again returns to play CIA director Eugene Kittridge.

The cast previously celebrated Cruise’s birthday at the premiere of the last Mission: Impossible movie in Sydney.

New faces to look forward to include Parks & Rec’s Nick Offerman, The Iron Claw’s Holt McCallany and Ted Lasso star Hannah Waddingham. Katy O’Brien, Janet McTeer, Lucy Tulugarjuk, Tramell Tillman, Charles Parnell, Mark Gatiss, and Rolf Saxon are also expected to appear.

The movie Mission: Impossible 8 is being promoted as the “final” entry in the spy franchise, presumably to heighten interest, but Cruise has yet to acknowledge that this could be his character’s last mission. Especially when the star was quoted last year, hoping to keep making Mission: Impossible movies into his 80s.

Harrison Ford is a legend, I’ve got 20 years to catch up with him,” he said. “I hope to keep making Mission: Impossible films until I’m his age.”

You can catch Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning in theaters on May 23, 2025.
