During an appearance at the 42nd Torino Film Festival, Alec Baldwin shocked the audience by claiming Americans are “uninformed” about current world issues at a press conference.

The actor, 66, crititiqued the American worldview in a negative light throughout his comments.

“Americans are very uninformed about reality and what’s going on,” Baldwin said. “Climate change, Ukraine, you name it. The most significant topic in the world is Americans’ appetite for a little bit of information.”

Baldwin appeared at the press conference on the condition that questions about the fatal shooting during the production of Rust, where cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was shot, would not be permitted. The film’s production was halted after a prop gun held by Baldwin went off, killing Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza.

Baldwin was charged with mansliaghter in the death, but a judge threw out the charges earlier this year.

During the conference, Baldwin was asked about his concerns for President-elect Donald Trump‘s new administration. He commented that there are “many challenges to face.”

The Golden Globe Award winner listed environmental changes as a real problem to solve, mentioning the need for using more renewable resources such as solar power.

Following this statement, Baldwin mentioned the importance of female directors.

“Of course, for some films, you need an energetic director who moves the camera continuously, and maybe a male director is better,” Baldwin said, “but for a comedy or a frame with lots of talk, what’s the difference between a male and female director?”

While Baldwin has been traveling around the globe receiving awards for his work, he was notably absent from the premiere of Rust in Poland. Hutchin’s family refused to attend due to the fact that Baldwin has not apologized to them.
