Ailes, the ousted founder of Fox News, reportedly had a pattern of calling her into his office and making sexual advances. Kelly states he was, “veering between obviously inappropriate sexually charged comments (e.g. about the ‘very sexy bras’ I must have and how he’d like to see me in them) and legitimate professional advice.’’ Kelly’s account claims that Ailes would offer to promote her in exchange for sexual favors, which she denied.
In January 2016, the abuse escalated to the point where Ailes was repeatedly trying to kiss her. When she shoved him away, Kelly alleges, ‘‘he asked me an ominous question: ‘When is your contract up?’ And then, for the third time, he tried to kiss me.’’
Susan Estrich, Ailes’ lawyer, issued the following statement: ‘‘This is what Ms. Kelly had to say about Roger Ailes only one year ago on the Charlie Rose program, ‘I really care about Roger. And he has been nothing but good to me. And he’s been very loyal. And he’s had my back. And he’s looked out for me.’
Her story overlaps with other accounts of sexual harassment by women at Fox. Gretchen Carlson won $20 million in damages from Fox for her claims against Ailes. More details will come when Kelly’s book, Settle For More, comes out Nov. 15. Pre-order packages contain a special, book-themed wristband.
