Transgender athlete Verónica Garcia told her critics to “get a life” after she was booed for dominating the girls’ Washington state track high school championship for the second year in a row.

On May 31, Garcia once again won the Class 2A 400-meter dash at Mount Tahoma High School. The scoreboard showed that she had a time of 55.70.

While being booed by the audience at her medal ceremony, she took a moment to embrace her victory.

As the runner for East Valley of Spokane was warming up before the race, a man wearing an American flag shirt reading “Save women’s sports” could be seen near the starting blocks. The man kept repeating the phrases “let’s go girls” and “girls’ race.”

But despite the criticisms, Garcia did not let them hold her back during the race.

“I’ll be honest, I kind of expect it,” she told The Seattle Times. “But it maybe didn’t have their intended effect. It made me angry, but not angry as in I wanted to give up, but angry as in I’m going to push.

“I’m going to put this in the most PG-13 way: I’m just going to say it’s a d— shame they don’t have anything else better to do. I hope they get a life. But oh well. It just shows who they are as people.”

The athlete beat second-place finisher Lauren Matthew of West Spokane by almost an entire second and beat her time from the 2024 state final by .05 seconds.

Garcia won last year’s championship with a time of 55.75. In doing so, she became the first transgender athlete in Washington State to win a state track title.

“I’m really proud of myself,” she said. “I did what I came to do, and that’s good enough for me.”

Trans athletes in girls’ sports have been a hot topic this year. ESPN’s College GameDay analyst Kirk Herbstreit and Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-California) have spoken out vocally against trans athletes competing in girls’ sports.

Ur a boy ,not a girl,ur have a dick between your legs, so how is that fair, that why they have the gay Olympics for. I’m I’m gay. But I don’t believe in trans women or trans boys being in any sports that biological voice or women competing and sports that biological women or men competing in it’s not fair and I think trans women or Boris to be banned from it there it’s just not fair you have a competitive edge against girls or boys it’s just not right and I don’t believe you need to be easy the bathroom either that’s just not right yeah I will get backlash on it but to me it’s just not right it makes me uncomfortable and I’m gay
