James Cameron‘s 1979 film Aliens inspired the 1986 sequel, which has reached it’s 30th anniversary.

The cast and creative team have been commemorating the anniversary by making press rounds. The franchise star Sigourney Weaver confirmed that the next follow up film will create a new timeline.

“It’s just as if, you know, the path forks and one direction goes off to three and four and another direction goes off to Neill’s movie,” Weaver told Entertainment Weekly.

The new film, directed by Neill Blomkamp, is still untitled. The director plans to ignore the events in of 1992’s Alien 3 and 1997’s Alien: Resurrection, creating a new timeline set immediately after the original 1979 film.

A prequel to the film, titled Alien: Covenant, is set to be released in 2017. There is no information of how Blomkamp’s story will intertwine with the 2017 release.

Weaver and Michael Biehn will be returning veterans to the franchise and concept art has been circulating online. There have been no development timelines set for the production of Blomkamp’s film, but Alien: Covenant will be in theaters August 4, 2017.
