Tim Tebow Joins New England Patriots, Becomes Backup To Tom Brady
Tim Tebow, the former Denver Bronco hero who sat the bench with the New York Jets last year, is set to sign with the New England Patriots for the upcoming NFL season, reported ESPN.
Tebow, an option quarterback with limited abilities as a passer, had been counted out as an addition to any NFL roster as a QB. It was thought he’d have a better chance as a tight end or fullback, where his athleticism and drive would be enough to see him be successful. After refusing to play in the league in any position but quarterback, Tebow has finally gotten another stab at it.
At New England, Tebow will be reunited with Josh McDaniels – the Patriots’ offensive coordinator who was the head coach of the Broncos squad when they drafted Tebow in the first round in 2010. He’ll be fighting for the first backup position behind Tom Brady with Ryan Mallet. Mike Kafka, a reserve QB for the Pats last year, was released on Monday.

Tebow has had a rough go of it in the NFL since leading the Broncos to a playoff win in 2011. After surpassing expectations with his fourth quarter miracles, Tebow was pushed out of the starting QB job when Denver acquired Peyton Manning. The Jets traded two draft picks to get Tebow, but he never gelled with the squad and attempted just eight passes during the 2012 season. His performance made it impossible for the Jets to secure a trade for Tebow, and they ended up cutting him in April. Many speculated that the polarizing player would have a hard time even securing a spot in the Canadian Football League.
Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, known for both getting more out of players traded off by other teams and keeping media frenzy around his team at a minimum, could be offering Tebow his best chance at success in the NFL.
