Sandra Bullock & Keanu Reeves Reunite For 30th Anniversary Of ‘Speed’: ‘We Knew We Were Doing Something Wacky’ 

Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves shared the stage at American Cinematheque at the Egyptian Theatre with director Jan de Bont to participate in a Q&A following a 30th-anniversary screening of their movie Speed. 

The actors and filmmaker appeared at Beyond Fest to reminisce about filming the 1994 thriller.

Uniting for the first time to discuss their work on Speed, the trio made their way to the stage after the memorable screening of the film concluded—impressed that all 516 seats in the theater were occupied. 

“We knew we were doing something wacky,” Reeves, who played Officer Jack, said to the crowd. 

“I was behind the wheel of a projectile, so I was just happy to be alive at the end of the day,” joked Bullock, who played Annie Porter. “I mean, I was new to the whole game, so I wasn’t aware of what was happening, what felt right, or what was not supposed to feel a certain way, but I was just, you’re just in it.” 

As Bullock talked about how she fought so hard for the role she grew to love, de Bont chimed in. 

“When I saw you, I knew it was going to be you,” the filmmaker said.

“I have never been so proud of those two actors, what they did for me and quite often unnatural to them,” he continued, noting the Speed stars’ success. “What they had to do is just unbelievable. But the relationship that those two created together is absolutely amazing. And seeing it back on the screen tonight, it was so real. They were absolutely perfect.”

As the action-packed film was known for its stunts, Reeves performed the more intense ones, including the infamous scene in which his character, Jack, lies in a cart connected to a cable and is pushed under a moving bus to disable a bomb. 

“When I was under the bus with that little cart thing with the little wheels, and you’re going 25 to 30 miles per hour, that gets a little sketchy,” Reeves recalled.

The Oscar-winning film created a poorly rated sequel in 1997, Speed 2: Cruise Control, so naturally, talk about a possible  Speed 3 was brought to light. 

“It would be a different movie for sure,” said de Bont. “But it would be great to work with them both. That’s absolutely true.”

In 2023, Bullock lost her partner, Bryan Randall, after a battle with ALS.
