Sandra Bullock’s partner Bryan Randall died peacefully on August 5 from ALS. He was 57.

The photographer had been battling the disease for three years privately. His family released a statement that read, “It is with great sadness that we share that on Aug. 5, Bryan Randall passed away peacefully after a three-year battle with ALS. Bryan chose early to keep his journey with ALS private and those of us who cared for him did our best to honor his request.”

They continued to thank the doctors who cared for Randall. “We are immensely grateful to the tireless doctors who navigated the landscape of this illness with us and to the astounding nurses who became our roommates, often sacrificing their own families to be with ours,” they wrote. “At this time we ask for privacy to grieve and to come to terms with the impossibility of saying goodbye to Bryan.”

The family has asked that instead of sending flowers to donate money to the Massachusetts General Hospital and the ALS Association.

The couple had been dating since 2015 after she hired Randall to take photographs at a birthday party for her son Louis. Bullock has two adopted children, Laila, 11, and Louis, 13. The two kept their relationship private but did go public in 2016 at Justin Theroux and Jennifer Aniston’s wedding.

They were not planning on getting married, but were very much in love as Bullock has called him the “love of my life.”

In an interview on Red Table Talk, Bullock told Jada Pinkett Smith, “I don’t wanna say do it like I do it, but I don’t need a paper to be a devoted partner and devoted mother.”

When speaking about Randall she stated, “He’s the example that I would want my children to have… I don’t always agree with him, and he doesn’t always agree with me. But he is an example even when I don’t agree with him.”
