Paula Patton goes topless in a love scene with Denzel Washington in the new film 2 Guns – a suggestion she made herself.

Patton said that despite a wardrobe fitting prior to the scene – which originally had her clothed – she thought that the scene between her character and Washington’s didn’t feel right with her covering up. “The day before we were gonna shoot the scene, I was thinking that these are people that have been together before and they have just made love, so it seemed really phony to me to have my shirt on, so I sprung it on [director] Baltasar [Kormakur] that I’m not going to be wearing a top,” Patton told WENN.

The night before filming the scene, Patton talked to her husband of eight years, R&B singer Robin Thicke, about going topless to make the scene more genuine. “I asked Robin before and I said, ‘It doesn’t feel natural,’ and he said, ‘Just go for it babe, absolutely,’” Patton said. “We don’t really get hung up about those things… Once I decided to take my shirt off, Denzel was like, ‘Well, I’m gonna take my shirt off,’ and it became a new scene.”

Though it is the first time Patton has gone topless on film, it is not the first time Patton has gone topless, period – in 2003 she stripped down to pose for the cover of then-boyfriend Thicke’s album A Beautiful World.

Thicke got himself in hot water earlier this year for his explicit Blurred Lines music video, in which he, Pharrell, and T.I. hang around with topless models. Patton was supportive of the video, tweeting: “Nudity is Beautiful!!! Violence is ugly. ROBIN #THICKE "BLURRED LINES is the SHIT!!! It's art and it makes me want to…”
