Olympic Gold Medalist Shawn Johnson Tests Positive For COVID-19 While Pregnant
Olympic Gold Medalist Shawn Johnson shared on her Instagram story on Sunday that she tested positive for COVID-19.
Johnson announced she was pregnant with her second child in January. Her and her husband, Andrew East, have a 15-month old daughter named Drew Hazel.
Johnson wrote on her Instagram stories that her diagnosis made her nervous, explaining “1: I don’t want to get my family sick. 2: I have asthma and have had it my entire life so this scares me a little extra. 3: had a very close family member fight for his life last month while battling Covid so it’s a serious topic of concern/hits home in our household.”
East shared in a pregnancy announcement video in January that he tested positive for COVID-19 shortly after finding out his wife was pregnant.
Johnson explained that her body was exhausted from previously taking care of her daughter while fighting a respiratory virus called RSV. Johnson shared that her symptoms so far were a headache, a cough and a sore throat. She said she was isolating and reminded people to take care of themselves and to wash their hands.
According to the CDC, there is still limited information about how COVID-19 effects pregnant women. Studies suggest pregnant women may be at higher risk of having more severe COVID-19 symptoms. The CDC website recommended that pregnant women take extra cautious measures to avoid infection.
