Delta Airlines hosted an impromptu pizza party after bad weather caused a long flight delay from Tennessee on Tuesday, May 26.

Delta Pizza Party

Passengers on a Delta flight from Philadelphia to Atlanta were frustrated when the plane was diverted to land in Knoxville, Tenn., due to weather concerns in Atlanta. They were stuck on the plane for two hours, waiting for the green light to take off for Atlanta, when the pilot announced that he had ordered pizza for the passengers to ease the wait.

“After we sat on the runway for two hours in Knoxville, the pilot kept giving us more bad news about not being able to leave the runway and fly to Atlanta because of a ban by the FAA. Then after delivering all the bad news, the pilot said, ‘But the good news is, we ordered you all pizza,’” recounted passenger Riley Vasquez, whose photos of the pizza party went viral on Twitter.

Delta spokesman Morgan Durrant said that the spur of the moment pizza party was part of a new effort by the airline to make customers more comfortable during long delays. “It’s part of an effort company-wide when weather disrupts our operation to get food and beverages to delayed customers,” Durrant said.

Of course, the pizza party was not without small problems, as noted by passenger Samir Chaudry. Chaudry, who chronicled the delay and eventual pizza delivery via Snapchat, claimed it took about 45 minutes for everybody in the plane (specifically those sitting in the rear of the cabin) to receive a slice.

The flight was eventually able to resume its path to Atlanta and landed three hours late.
