First Lady Jill Biden revealed she is disappointed in former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi for her role in pressuring Joe Biden to drop out of the 2024 presidential election.

On July 10, 2024, Pelosi appeared on MSNBC to discuss the debate within the Democratic party about Biden’s viability as a reelection candidate

After being asked if she supported the president’s former bid for reelection, she told the outlet that it is “up to the president to decide if he is going to run.” 

“We’re all encouraging him to make that decision because time is running short,” she added.

The ex-House Speaker mentioned that while Biden is “beloved” and “respected” within the Democratic caucus, she noted that it is not her place as a former party leader to make an endorsement.

“I want him to do whatever he decides to do… I am very proud of the president,” Pelosi declared.

In an interview with The Washington Post published on Jan. 15, Jill expressed her disappointment with Pelosi for her role in her husband’s withdrawal.

“We were friends for 50 years,” she told the publication. “It was disappointing.”

This interview also sheds light on how the first family deals with the end of the Biden presidency.

It focuses on the weeks last summer during which Democrats privately and publicly pushed for the president to step aside from the race.

“Let’s just say I was disappointed with how it unfolded,” Jill admitted. 

“I don’t know,” she then mentioned. “I learned a lot about human nature. I think that’s all I’m going to say.”

Jill declared that she still believes her husband could have served for another four years, even though he recently stated that he might not have survived a second term.

“Sure,” the first lady stated. “I mean, today, I think he has a full schedule. He started with interviews and briefings early, and it just keeps going.”

As Jill’s work at the White House ends, she hopes “women see [her] as a reflection of themselves.” 

“You know, a mom, a grandmom, a working woman, a sister, a friend,” she said.

When asked about her husband’s legacy, Jill shared that she hopes everyone will “remember [Biden] as a strong, empathetic president with integrity and character.” 

“I mean, character really is everything, isn’t it,” she concluded.
