Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem‘s Gucci bag, which contained nearly $3,000 in cash, was stolen from a restaurant in Washington, D.C. On April 21, Noem confirmed this incident at The Capital Burger restaurant one day early.

The Secret Service agents, who were guarding her, examined security camera footage at the restaurant and noticed an unknown white male, who wore a medical mask, steal her bag and leave the restaurant.

In addition to the cash, the thief escaped with Noem’s driver’s license, medication, apartment keys, passport, DHS access badge, makeup bag and blank checks.

Noem was recently criticized for wearing a $59,000 Rolex while filming a social media video at a supermax prison in El Salvador.

The Secret Service launched an investigation to trace any use of the DHS secretary’s financial instruments.

“Her entire family was in town, including her children and grandchildren – she was using the withdrawal to treat her family to dinner, activities, and Easter gifts,” a DHS spokesperson said in a statement.

A law enforcement source mentioned that the surveillance footage of the restaurant incident showed the suspect intentionally moving closer to her as he focused on her Gucci bag next to her feet.

The thief, dressed in dark clothing, sat down at an empty table next to Noem with his back toward her and used his left foot to slide the bag away.

Noem discovered her bag was missing only when the secretary got up from the table.

It is still unclear if the thief knew Noem’s identity or if she was a random target.
