Following a stiff performance at her Celebration of Mimi residency in Las Vegas, Mariah Carey’s fans are concerned for her well-being.

A video of Carey’s performance at Park MGM has sparked speculation among viewers that the singer is slowing down. In clips of the show, Carey makes steady, deliberate steps across the stage, largely remaining stationary, while backup dancers sashay around her. Amid comparisons to Joe Biden, internet users have made remarks about the singer’s stamina and acuity.

“Why is she moving like she’s 105 years old?” one person asked.

Others speculated that her slow movements might be related to her extravagant outfit. In her trademark superfluous style, Carey sported a bright pink bodysuit and a trailing tulle skirt accented by chunky, exceedingly tall high heels with little support. One internet user wondered whether the singer was “petrified to walk in those heels,” another saying, “Maybe it’s time to start wearing flats.”

However, many of Carey’s fans were quick to stick up for the artist with remarks such as, “I see nobody in the comments here that has a five octave vocal range 19 number one hits and consecutive awards” and “none of you will ever ever be her and none of you will ever have the impact that she has.”

One particularly passionate fan scolded other commenters, “NO Mariah disrespect tolerated. She’s a SINGER. A VOCALIST. An ICON. She EARNED her cemented place in history by her talent and hard work. It’s insane that society believes you have to keep running yourself into the ground when you’ve [already] outworked and outperformed 90% of the people in your field.”

Furthermore, fans questioned why others were scorning a singer for her dancing abilities. Unlike other female performers, such as Jennifer Lopez and Shakira, Carey has never made dancing on stage a priority; instead, she stayed focused on her vocals.

A 20th-anniversary tribute to Carey’s tenth album, The Emancipation of Mimi, the Celebration of Mimi residency covers several decades of Carey’s music. The 24-show residency began in April 2024 and is set to conclude on Feb. 15.
