Amazon Studios along with Left Bank Pictures and Sony Pictures is developing a reboot series of the 2011 psychological thriller The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Amazon will create an original TV series based on writer Steig Larsson’s first book in his best-selling series of novels called Millennium. The reboot will be a standalone story, not a sequel or continuation of any of Larsson’s books or movies.

There has yet to be an announcement about the series’ cast or writing team.

The series will follow Larsson’s main character, Lisbeth Salander, but placed in “today’s world” with new characters and challenges. Salander first appeared as the main character in the 2005 book, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and all of the sequel books: The Girl Who Played with Fire, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets’ Nest, The Girl in the Spider’s Web, The Girl Who Takes an Eye for an Eye and The Girl Who Lived Twice.

Larsson’s Millennium series has sold more than 100 million copies worldwide.

Rooney Mara played Salander and received an Academy Award nomination for her performance in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Directed by David Fincher and also starring Daniel Craig, the movie grossed more than $232 million at the global box office.
