Rep. Sarah McBride (D-Delaware) reflected on her new documentary, State of First, which explores her journey to becoming the first transgender member of Congress in U.S. history, in an exclusive conversation with uInterview founder Erik Meers. “My interest in politics really stem from when I was a kid, feeling alone and scared and wondering whether the heart of this country was big enough to love someone like me,” McBride said, reflecting on how she found her calling. “I stumbled across these books about the Capitol and the White House… I saw as I read those books that the throughline of every part of our history was the story of advocates, activists and a handful of courageous and effective elected officials working together to right the wrongs of our past and address injustice.” State of Firsts will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival on Saturday.
