Amy Winehouse Is Laid To Rest
Amy Winehouse has finally been laid to rest. The soul singer, 27, who died suddenly on Saturday of unknown causes, was mourned by her family and closest friends in a private ceremony held at Edgwarebury Cemetery in North London. Fans waited outside the premises but were not allowed in.
Winehouse's father, Mitch, elicited bittersweet laughter by telling stories about a headstrong young Amy. "Goodnight my angel," he said. "Sleep tight. Mommy and Daddy love you ever so much." One of Amy's favorite songs, Carole King's "So Far Away," ended the ceremony.
Deejay and recording artist Mark Ronson, a close friend of Winehouse's and the producer of her Back to Black album, attended the funeral, as well as best friend Kelly Osbourne. Ronson has described Winehouse as his "musical soul mate." Osbourne, along with other women in attendance, sported Winehouse's signature "beehive" hairstyle in honor of her. Winehouse's ex-husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, who's serving a 32-month jail sentence for burglary and possession of a firearm, was denied release to attend the funeral.
Winehouse's death has received an outpouring of emotion and words from her fans and colleagues. Most notably, the comedian Russell Brand issued a heartfelt letter on his web site about his appreciation of Winehouse's "genius" and the tragic dangers brought on by "the disease of addiction."
