TAREK EL MOUSSA BIOGRAPHY: CAREER

El Moussa got his real estate license in 2002 and proved to be successful, until the 2008 economic crisis. El Moussa and Haack downgraded their home and decided to venture into flipping houses.

In an exclusive interview with uInterview, El Moussa discussed how he got started on flipping.

“I was selling real estate in early 2000s and it was going well, and we all know what happened in 2006, 2007 and 2008, those wonderful years,” he began. “And all of a sudden I started seeing all these short sales and bank loans and all these deals and I’m really good at math, but I knew nothing about construction, and so I was looking at the numbers and I was like, ‘wait a minute, you can buy for x, put y into it, and sell for z.’ There’s a margin, so I knew there was money to be made. I had no money, nothing, so I would just pull up all these different examples of potential properties that could have been flipped and share them with friends,  family, business people, and everyone I knew, and finally after asking everybody, I got some people to invest.”

It was during this first flip that El Moussa and Haack recorded their process and sent the audition tape to HGTV. The network picked up their show Flip or Flop and it aired for ten seasons.

After the end of Flip or Flop, El Moussa starred in his own HGTV show, Flipping 101 With Tarek El Moussa where he mentored beginner house-flippers. In an exclusive interview with uInterview, he talked about the launching of this show.

“There are two different options [for the new show],” El Moussa said. “One, I’m coming in and mentoring rookie flippers that literally have it all on the line. They’re doing their first or second [real estate] deal and they really need guidance, as they put their life savings into it. I come in and make sure that everything turns out ok, or at least to the best of my ability.”

“Another option on the show would be me coming in and helping flippers that are in big trouble and need a bailout,” he continued. “Maybe they ran out of money or the contractor stole their money, maybe the rehab is all going wrong, so I just come in and try to save the day as best I can.”

The show has been renewed for a third season, set to premiere in 2023.

TAREK EL MOUSSA BIOGRAPHY: HEALTH

In 2013 one viewer of Flip or Flop, nurse Ryan Reade noticed the signs of thyroid cancer on El Moussa and contacted producers. In an exclusive interview with uInterview, El Moussa discussed his health and how he was doing at the time.

“I’m doing good. I had a lot of health challenges for quite a few years,” he said. “I had lung cancer then I got hit with another cancer, then after that, I got hit with a debilitating back injury. And, of course, my divorce. I pretty much went through five years of hell. That’s what I call it. And today, the lessons I learned are amazing. I’m a better person. I’m a happier person. I’m a stronger person, I know what’s important. I focus on today and tomorrow; I don’t think about the past. I want to live the absolute best possible life ever. If I’m able to do that means my children will have the same.”
