‘The Heart of Rock and Roll’ Is A Jukebox Musical That Hits the Right Notes On Broadway

In a surprise for fans of Huey Lewis and the News, the spirit of rock and roll is alive on Broadway. The cherished band’s songs have received the Broadway treatment in the new show, The Heart of Rock and Roll.

Jonathan A. Abrams deserves a round of applause for his work (based on a story by Tyler Mitchell and Lewis himself), which serves as a vehicle for the Huey Lewis and News songs. With a talented ensemble of singers and dancers, new life is breathed into the iconic tunes. 

The production falls under the well-established category of jukebox musicals, where the songbooks of beloved rockers and folk singers are fair game for the stage. 

The story follows Bobby (played by Cory Cott), an ambitious young man who serves as the lead singer of a band. At the same time, he works at a box-manufacturing company and dreams of becoming a salesman. Torn between his passion for music and his pursuit of success in sales, Bobby finds himself in trouble as he divides his time between the two.

Along the journey to the climactic finale, where “The Power of Love” takes center stage, there’s minimal concern about the eventual outcome. Bobby must make a pivotal decision: honor a contract he signed with the box company or the one he signed with his band.

Cott delivers a sensitive performance in Bobby’s introspective moment and exudes the grit of rock and roll and a natural charm that resonates throughout the entire cast.

In addition to the iconic “The Power of Love,” the musical features many other hits by Huey Lewis and the News Top 40. Devoted fans will be treated to a lovingly executed rendition of the title track and all the favorites, backed by conductor Will Van Dyke and a lively rock band.
