It was announced on this past Friday, that Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane, 39, will do a guest spot on FOX’s The Simpsons, the network’s other long-running, successful animated show.

The episode will air next fall as the show’s season 25 premiere. MacFarlane will play a gentleman looking to romance Marge Simpson. “We wanted to come together in a bipartisan way to make Fox Sunday night rock,” said Simpsons executive producer Al Jean of the MacFarlane casting. “This was all very fun.”

The two shows have had a longstanding, but respectful, rivalry. They have each taken pokes at each other over the years, but it has always been in good fun. In fact, MacFarlane did a cameo on another show of Simpsons creator Matt Groening, Futurama. “We thought we had a great part that he’d be perfect for, and it would be great to have him on our show, so it worked out just right,” Jean told Entertainment Weekly, noting: “There’s been a little rivalry. We’re both humor shows and we make jokes, but it’s always been friendly.”

The news caps an amazing year for MacFarlane, who saw his movie Ted perform well at the box office this past summer, hosted the season premiere of Saturday Night Live, and will host the Academy Awards in February.
