Sam Smith is opening up about his own gender identity in an interview with Jameela Jamil‘s new Instagram-based show I Weigh Interviews.

Smith revealed that he views himself as “non-binary.” Smith, 26, said he had been doing some reading and when he came across the idea of being “gender-queer,” he felt it resonated.

“When I saw the word non-binary/genderqueer and I read into it and I heard these people speaking, Smith, 26, said. “F–, that is me.”

He noted that he has had these feelings since he was a child.

As a kid, Smith was always self conscious about his weight. He had always carried more weight in his chest. At age 8, he recalled asking his mom to write him a note to get out of swimming classes. He even went through liposuction surgery at age 12 to get rid of the extra weight.

He recalls feeling out of place and self-conscious about wearing a bathing suit and that opened him up to bullying. A classmate even grabbed his chest “on the playground in front of all his friends.”

“It’s the basis of all my sadness,” he said. “Literally everything I’ve ever been sad about is my weight. I struggle with it every day.”

“Yesterday I decided to fight the f— back,” he continued. “Reclaim my body and stop trying to change this chest and these hips and these curves that my mum and dad made and love so unconditionally.”
