Sports agent Jeff Sperbeck died on April 26 after falling from a moving golf cart driven by former NFL star John Elway and suffering a traumatic brain injury.

Sperbeck, who represented Elway, was confirmed dead by the Riverside Sheriff’s Coroner’s office Wednesday. Sperbeck was with Elway at the time of the incident at 7 p.m. The duo was at the Madison Club in La Quinta, California, witnesses said that Elway was driving the cart when Sperbeck fell.

“I am devastated and heartbroken by the passing of my close friend, business partner, and agent Jeff Sperbeck,” Elway said in a statement on Wednesday. “There are no words to express the profound sadness I truly feel with the loss of someone who meant so much to me.

“My heart and sympathies go out to Jeff’s wife, his children, and everyone who knew and loved him. Jeff will be deeply missed for the loyalty, wisdom, friendship, and love he brought into my life and the lives of so many others.”

Sperbeck was put on life support following the injury and was only able to be kept alive long enough for his organs to be donated. Elway made the 911 call after Sperbeck fell, and the Riverside County Sheriff’s Office launched an investigation shortly after.

“The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office is committed to conducting a thorough investigation into the death of Sperbeck, and will take action based on the outcome,” the sheriff announced in a statement.

From 2011 to 2020, Elway was the GM of the Denver Broncos, the team he used to captain.
