ABC has put in an order for a Grey’s Anatomy spinoff series.

ABC PICKS UP GREY’S ANATOMY SPINOFF SERIES

The focus of the untitled show, however, will not be on a group of doctors, but rather on a team of firefighters. Like Grey’s, the show will follow the characters’ professional and personal lives, and surely be fraught with drama.

The spinoff is expected to be launched as part of an episode of the long-running medical drama. Grey’s previously inspired the spinoff Private Practice, which saw Kate Walsh‘s Dr. Addison Shepherd (later Addison Forbes) leave the show and enter her own in the same world. When Private Practice ended in 2013, Caterina Scorsone migrated over to Grey’s to become series regular Dr. Amelia Shepherd.

There is no word, however, on any (if there will be any) crossover characters between Grey’s and this new spinoff show. Shondaland veteran Stacy McKee will serve as a showrunner for the new series, created by Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers. McKee has been with Grey’s since its inception, coming up the ranks from staff writer to showrunner.

“No one can interweave the jeopardy firefighters face in the line of duty with the drama in their personal lives quite like Shonda, and Grey’s‘ signature Seattle setting is the perfect backdrop for this exciting spinoff,” said ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey.
