CEO Shooting Suspect Luigi Mangione Decided Against Planting A Bomb In Manhattan To Avoid ‘Killing Innocents’
Luigi Mangione, the man who allegedly shot and killed previous United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson, reportedly had initially planned on bombing the Manhattan area where Thompson was to speak.
Mangione, 26, formerly his high school’s valedictorian and an Ivy League graduate, was apprehended in December at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania when he stopped to flirt with an employee. Upon being apprehended, his backpack contained a three-page manifesto criticizing the American healthcare system, as well as a 3D-printed pistol and black silencer. Also found in his bag was a notebook with a to-do list for before the attack. In the notebook, he supposedly considered the idea of killing Thompson by bomb, but nixed the idea upon the conclusion that it “could kill innocents.” He decided that the direct shooting would be a more targeted statement against the healthcare system.
In his manifesto, Mangione, who was denied medical care for his spinal injury, emphasized the despicable way health insurance companies prize profits over care.
He wrote, “To save you a lengthy investigation, I state plainly that I wasn’t working with anyone. This was fairly trivial: some elementary social engineering, basic CAD, [and] a lot of patience.”
Mangione went on to apologize for any “traumas” he may have caused, though he did not express any regret or doubt about his actions.
Mangione’s notably good looks have caused a frenzy across the media and prompted many to romanticize the handsome criminal who took matters into his own hands to make a statement against the American Healthcare system. Mangione’s Instagram account, which had been inactive since 2021, jumped from less than 1,000 followers to 27,000 within days of the attack.
Also, an unexpected outcome from the event, people became obsessed with the jacket Mangione was wearing in security footage from McDonalds. Photos of Mangione have sparked thousands of searches for the jacket, which costs $225, and hundreds of purchases within the last several days.
Forty-one percent of young Americans believe Manione’s actions were justified, according to a recent poll.
