Actor George Clooney has officially endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris for president, following President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the 2024 race.

Clooney, 63, issued a statement expressing his support for Harris. “President Biden has demonstrated true leadership by saving democracy once again. We’re eager to support Vice President Harris in her historic campaign,” the actor said.

This endorsement comes just weeks after Clooney penned a controversial essay for The New York Times, urging Biden to step down. In his piece, the Oscar-winning actor cited concerns about Biden’s performance in the June 27 presidential debate against Donald Trump and pointed to troubling poll numbers.

Clooney’s essay acknowledged his previous support for Biden, mentioning his co-hosting of a record-breaking Hollywood fundraiser for the campaign. However, he expressed disappointment in Biden’s recent public appearances, stating that the president seemed diminished compared to his earlier self.

“The Joe Biden I encountered at the fundraiser wasn’t the same vibrant figure from 2010 or even 2020,” Clooney wrote, adding that Biden’s debate performance was particularly concerning.

Despite his criticism, Clooney emphasized his admiration for Biden’s character and accomplishments. “I consider him a friend and believe in his morals,” the actor wrote, praising Biden’s victories over the past four years. However, Clooney concluded that age was an obstacle for the 81-year-old president.

Clooney’s call for Biden to step aside echoed sentiments expressed by other prominent Democrats in recent weeks.

On Sunday, July 21, Biden announced his decision to exit the race via social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. In a later statement, he endorsed Harris as the Democratic presidential nominee.

Harris reacted to the endorsement on Sunday through a statement released by the Biden campaign. She praised Biden’s choice as “selfless and patriotic.”

“With this selfless and patriotic act, President Biden is once again prioritizing the American people and our country, as he has done throughout his life of service,” she wrote.

Harris added, “I am honored to have the President’s endorsement and intend to earn and win this nomination… We have 107 days until Election Day. Together, we will fight. And together, we will win.”
