‘Game Of Thrones’ To Shoot Multiple Endings To Deter Hackers
HBO is planning to shoot a few different endings for the series finale of Game of Thrones.
GAME OF THRONES TO FILM MULTIPLE ENDINGS TO DETER LEAKERS
As the show enters its eighth and final season, HBO programming president Casey Bloys shares that it’s important to shoot multiple endings so that fans can’t piece together the end until it airs. “I know Game of Thrones, the ending, they’re going to shoot multiple versions so that nobody really know what happens,” he shared at a college speech. “You have to do that on a long show. Because when you’re shooting something, people know. So they’re going to shoot multiple versions so that there’s no real definitive answer until the end.”
This strategy will also help deter hackers, after multiple shows and scripts were leaked to the public before they hit the air last season. In season seven, nearly all of the major plot points were leaked to the public prior to an episode airing. Bloys is hopeful that having multiple endings will fake-out the hackers, and avoid spoilers to the public.
“Finales are tough,” Bloys continued. “If you think about, Six Feet Under, well that was a pretty good finale. But if you think about Seinfeld, if you think about The Sopranos, if you think about Breaking Bad. Everybody has an opinion about how a show should end.”
This strategy has been used by major shows in the past, including The Walking Dead. When a main character’s fate was left uncertain between seasons, AMC would film several fake death scenes to throw off fans and leakers.
The premiere date of Game of Thrones season eight has yet to be announced, and it could air in either 2018 or 2019. “They have to write the episodes and figure out the production schedule,” Bloys explained. “We’ll have a better sense of that once they get further into the writing.”
