Sarah Silverman Has Life-Threatening Surgery For Epiglottis: ‘I’m Lucky To Be Alive!’
Last night, comedian Sarah Silverman took to Facebook to share a medical scare.
“I’m lucky to be alive,” she wrote. “Don’t even know why I went to the doctor, it was just a sore throat. But I had a freak case of epiglottis.”
Epiglottitis is a swelling of the cartilage lid that covers the windpipe. The condition can block the flow of air into lungs and is potentially life threatening.
Silverman reflected, “There’s something that happens when three people you’re so close to die within a year and then YOU almost die but don’t.”
“I owe my life to Dr. Shawn Nasseri, Dr. Robert Naruse, Dr. Rob Huizenga, every nurse, and every technician & orderly at Cedars who’s punch-the-clock jobs happen to save human lives on the regular,” Silverman wrote.
She says she could not be medicated to full unconsciousness, due to low blood pressure, but she was given enough to prevent pain while her arms were restrained to prevent her from tampering with her breathing tube.
Silverman went on to thank the friends and family that supported her through the journey and told funny recovery stories to end the post.
