U.S. fell to Germany in the final game of the group stage of the 2014 World Cup, yet will still be advancing into the Round of 16.

U.S. Loses, Still Moves On

When the whistle blew at the end of USA’s tough matchup against Germany, they were down, 1-0. Thankfully, in the other Group G match of the day, Portugal had bested Ghana, 2-0. Though both the U.S. and Portugal end the group stage with four points, the U.S. finished with a zero point goal differential to Portugal’s negative three. Portugal had lost to Germany 4-0.

Throughout the first half at Arena Pernambuco, the American squad weathered a storm of opportunities for Germany to go into the locker-room at halftime in a scoreless draw. However, 10 minutes into the second half, Germany’s Thomas Müller put one away to lift his team ahead. For the remainder of the game, the U.S. held the Germans.

In the Portugal vs. Ghana game, Portugal was the first to score when John Boye struck the ball into the back of the net in the 31st minute. Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan got the equalizer in the 57th minute. If Ghana had pulled ahead, if would have spelt trouble for the U.S. Thankfully, Cristiano Ronaldo – who’d had the assist in Portugal’s tying goal against the U.S. Sunday, netted a goal in the 80th minute to put Portugal ahead and give the U.S. some breathing room to advance with the loss.

The U.S. will play the winner of Group H – which is most likely to be Belgium – on Tuesday in Salvador at 4:00 p.m. EST.
