Rex Orange County’s Alex O’Connor Charged With Six Counts Of Sexual Assault
Rex Orange County’s Alex O’Connor has been charged with six counts of sexually assaulting the same woman.
O’Connor allegedly assaulted the woman twice in London’s West End on June 1, and then once in a taxi and three times in Notting Hill the following day. She is reportedly over the age of 16.
On October 10, the “Best Friend” singer appeared at Southwark Crown Court to plead not guilty to all the charges. He was then released on unconditional bail.
O’Connor’s representative said in a statement, “Alex is shocked by the allegations, which he denies, and looks forward to clearing his name in court. He is unable to make any further comment because of the ongoing proceedings.”
Back in July, the English singer and songwriter announced the cancelation of his upcoming Australia, New Zealand and European shows.
He cited “unforeseen personal circumstances” that would require him to “spend some time at home this year” as the reason.
“This is the last thing I want to do,” O’Connor tweeted at the time. “I love touring and I am so sorry to be letting anyone down. I look forward to getting back to it as soon as I can.”
Fans (or ex-fans now) took to social media to express their rage, disappointment and grief at the news of O’Connor’s alleged sexual assault.
Twitter users like @rntng247 wrote about their devastation. “Rex Orange County was literally the soundtrack to my life. I’m like not okay RN. WTF. So sorry for all of the victims. I feel ill.”
Others, like @daylighthaze, pointed out the “vile” nature of O’Connor’s explanation for canceling his tour.
“The way everyone was so concerned for Rex Orange County when he said he was canceling shows… when it actually was because he was accused of sexual assault. Vile man,” they tweeted.
A provisional trial date has been set for January 3, 2023.
