Prince Harry Faces Backlash Over Claims Of ‘Racist’ Approach To African Charities
Prince Harry has been criticized for his “racist” approach to his African charities.
In his memoir Spare, Harry rhapsodized about his love for Africa and asserted that while he may be British, his soul belongs to the continent. In recent years, Africans affected by his charities have begun calling him out for using a “racist and colonial” approach to helping to sustain conservation in African parks.
Sophie Chandauka, the Zimbabwe-born chairwoman who led Harry’s Lesotho-based AIDS organization, has suggested that he and other trustees were participants in abuse of power, bullying, harassment and misogynistic behavior. Chandauka called Harry’s organization, Sentebale, a “vanity project” for Harry and the trustees after they announced that they would be stepping down over a leadership dispute with her.
The accusations are sure to damage the Prince’s image, who has tried to present himself as being enlightened on racial matters after marrying his biracial American wife, Meghan Markle, and decrying the racism directed at her from the British Royal Family.
Harry has lost his focus on charitable work after marrying Markle and focusing his efforts on becoming a media mogul.
Chandauka said she was trying to raise concerns about problems within Sentebale and filed a lawsuit with the High Court in the U.K., which has confirmed that investigations are underway. Harry also faces controversy with African Parks, a nonprofit organization that manages 22 parks in 12 African countries.
