Pretty Little Liars kicked off its fourth season with Aria (Lucy Hale), Spencer (Troian Bellisario), Emily (Shay Mitchell) and Hanna (Ashley Benson) standing in front of the trunk of Officer Wilden’s (Bryce Johnson) mud-covered cop car where there's a dead pig. The gang of liars, still wary of Mona (Janel Parish), waits anxiously as she removes the drive that holds the video incriminating Ashley (Laura Leighton). When she finally removes it, she hops in their getaway car and goes with them to Spencer’s house, which, as per usual, is absent of parents.

At Spencer’s, the four “liars” question the former member of the 'A' Team – imploring Mona to tell them everything she knows about all of the things they don’t know. What did Mona reveal? She had thought CeCe (Vanessa Ray) was Alison (Sasha Pieterse) when she visited her at Radley, though she doesn’t know what they talked about as she was on some strong meds. She owned up to recruiting Toby (Keegan Allen) to join the 'A' Team, but it was Lucas (Brendan Robinson) who gave Emily the creepy massage. Also, Shana is in love with Jenna (Tammin Sursok), and both of them are terrified of Spencer’s older sister Melissa (Torrey DeVitto).

Melissa, as it turns out, was dressed up as the Queen of Hearts that was going after Aria on the Halloween train – along with Wilden. Mona, bringing Aria, Spencer, Hanna and Emily back to her RV of a lair, shows them a video of the incident on her laptop. Incidentally, before the liars see Melissa’s face under the mask, Mona’s computer is remotely hacked and her hard drive wiped clean. When the five of them emerge from the RV, five girls around the age of 10 that eerily resemble the sleuthing young woman are playing with dolls with their likeness. Of course, they say that they got the dolls from Mona’s friend Alison, aka Red Coat.

Since Mona is holding onto the drive that shows her mother running over Wilden, Hanna decides it’s in her best interest to become best buds with her again. The pair go shopping, run errands together, etc., but Mona calls Hanna out on her fake-friendship. Mona tells Hanna she did love her once, and that she had been her friend before handing over the drive and telling Hanna it’s the only copy. Meanwhile, Paige (Lindsey Shaw) tries to convince Emily that the two of them should go to Stanford together and get away from all of the madness of Rosewood. Emily, after saying how much she loves Paige, agrees it’s probably a smart decision.

Later that night, Aria bumps into her new ex-boyfriend Ezra (Ian Harding) at the coffee shop. Ezra reveals that he’s been offered a full-time job at Rosewood High, and that he’s decided to accept it because he has a family to take care of now. Aria takes the news in stride, but the next day in school she can’t keep her eyes off him chatting with other students. When she gets called down to the office, Aria imagines that the Vice Principal has photographic evidence of her and Ezra’s affair, which leads to Fitz getting led out of the school in handcuffs. In reality, the VP just wants her to bring an envelope to her mother, but the daydream leads Aria to officially end things with her teacher via text.

Wilden’s body was found on the street near his abandoned patrol car, which creates another unsolved murder and another funeral at Rosewood’s church with the liars all dressed in their black dresses. Why do they go? They received a text from 'A' implying something incriminating was in Wilden’s casket; the item was Ashley’s phone. When they’re descending the church steps, a new officer in town addresses them by name. He claims he’s a good guy and even comments on Wilden’s unprofessional and obsessive investigation of them – but then asks why they’d go to this guy’s funeral. As the officer pulls away, the five girls get a text. Apparently, 'A' videotaped them stealing the drive from Wilden’s car.

Series executive producer Marlene King promises that season 4 of Pretty Little Liars will be filled with answers. The series premiere, through Mona, served up quite a few, but the mystery of the girl in the red coat remains.

Pretty Little Liars airs Mondays on ABC Family at 8/7c.
