Mindy Kaling Opens Up About Meghan Markle’s Demand She Be Called ‘Sussex’
Mindy Kaling has responded to the internet’s obsession with her “awkward” interaction with Meghan Markle on her show Love, Meghan, as well as the poor reviews the series has received.
Love, Meghan was released earlier this week and follows Markle around her house as she offers home advice and kitchen tips. The series features many celebrity guests, including Kaling, Roy Choi and Delfina Blaquier.
Now fully available on Netflix, Love Meghan has received harsh reviews from multiple outlets. Viewers rolled their eyes at Markle’s “sickeningly sweet” attitude. Fans also scorned Markle’s claim that her lavish household items were reasonably priced for the public.
Kaling, featured in the second episode of Love, Meghan, has now commented on her supposedly “awkward” moment on the show and the negative reaction the series has received.
In the episode, where Markle prepares for a children’s party, she and Kaling make a variety of hors d’oeuvres and a balloon arch. While the two were preparing in the kitchen, Markle commented to Kaling, “It’s so funny too, that you keep saying ‘Meghan Markle’… You know I’m ‘Sussex’ now.”
Markle’s name change was not taken seriously by many, similar to Kanye West’s switch to ‘Ye.’
Following the awkward moment going viral on social media, Kaling addressed the internet’s reaction in Thursday’s episode of The View.
Speaking about the episode, Kaling shared, “You know, I had a great time. I noticed that whenever I do something, anything related to Meghan, it becomes big news. We were making sandwiches, and then they’ll push in on my face on TikTok and they’ll be like, ‘Look at this emotion you felt!’ I honestly didn’t even remember it because we shot it like, nine months ago.”
She added, “I loved my time with Meghan. I’m also like, let her promote her show. It was great and really fascinating seeing the reaction.”
Whoopie Goldberg remarked, “People love to hate [Markle]. People love to talk about her.”
Markle’s show received negative press long before its release, with fans and critics alike positing skeptical assumptions about the content. This followed Markle and Prince Harry’s failed series Polo, which was met with resoundingly unimpressed reviews. Despite appearing only in two episodes, Markle was subjected to notably more hate for the series than Harry, the lead focus.
Originally slated to premiere in January, Love, Meghan was delayed until March, supposedly due to the L.A. wildfires. However, it suspiciously overlapped with a recent avalanche of online hate toward Markle.
