Gov. Jeff Landry (R-Louisiana) is being criticized after he posted a photo of himself giving the thumbs up at a New Orleans steakhouse after the terror attack in the city left 15 people dead. On Jan. 1, 15 people were killed in a car-ramming attack in Bourbon Street.

Police and emergency vehicles soon lined the streets in response to this attack, which took place at 3:00 a.m.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) gave a press conference confirming available details about the suspect in the vehicle attack. FBI assistant special agent in charge, Aletha Duncan, stated that the FBI was investigating the incident as an “attack of terrorism” and confirmed the suspect was identified as United States-born citizen Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42, from Texas.

Duncan noted that the suspect used a rented pickup truck to ram into a crowd of people and opened fire on local law enforcement, injuring two, before police returned fire, killing the suspect.

An ISIS flag was discovered on a pole attached to the trailer hitch of the truck. Authorities are investigating any possible ties to the terror organization.

Duncan also confirmed that weapons and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were found inside the vehicle, and two IEDs were found at locations in the French Quarter.

On Wednesday night, Landry posted a photo on X which showed himself giving a thumbs-up with several people outside the Bon Tob Prime Rib steakhouse, which is ten minutes away from the site of the terror attack.

“Ate dinner tonight in New Orleans,” the Louisiana governor wrote in the post’s caption. “Proud to be a part of this incredibly resilient city.”

“See everyone at the game tomorrow,” he added, alluding to the Sugar Bowl college football game delayed following the terror attack.

In the wake of the attack, other X users soon condemned him, accusing him of being tone-deaf.

“I am sorry, but people are grieving tonight,” clinical sports psychologist Dr. Bhrett McCabe, PhD, wrote on the platform. You could have put out a different message that you were visiting with tourists and locals; instead, you posted a tone-deaf picture. I was hoping you were better for Louisiana than your predecessors—this is awful.”

“15 people DEAD in a terrorist attack… let’s celebrate with a STEAK DINNER,” the user known as @SuckItVileLibs stated on X. “Such vile people.”

“Dude,” @BurtMaclin_FBI wrote on Wednesday night. “Several of your constituents are no longer alive due to a terrorist attack, and you thought going out to a steak house with friends and then posting about it was a good idea? Fire yourself.”

“It’s important to understand that we have many visitors in the city of New Orleans right now,” Landry wrote in a follow-up post on the same night.

“Safety is our top priority, and we want our guests and the world to know that Louisiana does not cower to radical Islamic terrorists,” he went on to say. “Our restaurants and all New Orleans has to offer remain open for business!”

Landry is no stranger to controversies. In June 2024, Landry signed a law that authorized the display of the Ten Commandments in public school classrooms.
