A few months after coming out as transgender, Elliot Page has revealed that he had recently underwent top surgery to remove his breasts.

In a recent Time magazine cover story, Page recalled a memory of when he was finally allowed to cut his hair short at the age of 9. “I felt like a boy. I wanted to be a boy. I would ask my mom if I could be someday.”

Although a couple of months later, Page had to grow out his hair again when he was cast in the TV show Pit Pony, playing the role of a daughter in a Canadian mining family. “I became a professional actor at the age of 10. Of course I had to look a certain way,” he said.

After coming out on Instagram in December, the Umbrella Academy star revealed that he was already recovering from his surgery.

“It has completely transformed my life,” he said as had spent most of life being uncomfortable in his body.

“For a long time I could not even look at a photo of myself,” Page recalled about his feminine role in 2007’s Juno, which earned him an Oscar nomination at the time.

He didn’t anticipate how big the story became after he shared his truth and the responsibility it came with. “Extremely influential people are spreading these myths and damaging rhetoric – every day you’re seeing our existence debated. Transgender people are so very real,” Page said.

Page married Emma Portner in 2018 but the pair separated in 2020 before announcing their divorce early this year after the isolation they felt due to the pandemic.

“After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce following our separation last summer,” they said in a joint statement. “We have the utmost respect for each other and remain close friends.”
