Comedian Rosie O’Donnell explained that she left for Ireland because President Donald Trump has had it out for her for 20 years after she criticized him on The View.

On March 21, O’Donnell gave this explanation during an appearance on RTÉ’s The Late Late Show. “What made you up sticks from the States and join us,” the show’s host, Patrick Kielty, asked the comedian.

“There’s the president of the United States that has it out for me and has for 20 years, when I told the truth about him on a program called The View, where it was my job to talk about pop culture, [and] politics,” O’Donnell stated.

“I mentioned his bankruptcies, and I mentioned all of the sexual assault charges, and I mentioned that he was not, in fact, the businessman that everyone thinks he is because of the show, The Apprentice, where they sold a bunch of lies to America for over 10 years, and half of America believed it,” she recalled. “And so, he was very angry, to say the least, and he hasn’t let it go. And he uses me as a punchline whenever he feels the need.”

She then mentioned that Trump has been calling her out “for two decades and [she is] still not used to it.”

On March 11, O’Donnell shared that she moved to Ireland five days before the 2025 inauguration because of the weight of Trump’s presidency.

She then said that her family would consider moving back “when it is safe for all citizens to have equal rights there in America.”

Nine days later, the comedian posted a video on TikTok in which she said she was feeling “healthier” and sleeping better without the stress and anxiety over what was happening politically in [America].”

She was also grateful that she was no longer being “singled out by the President of the United States” after Trump’s election.
