Alec Baldwin Felt Suicidal Following Fatal Shooting On ‘Rust’ Set
A new episode of Alec Baldwin and Hilaria Baldwin’s newly premiered reality show The Baldwins has revealed that following the tragic shooting on the set of Rust, Baldwin wanted to kill himself.
On the set of the Western film Rust in 2021, crew member Halyna Hutchins was killed when Baldwin fatally shot her after waving around what he thought was a prop gun. Director Joel Souza was also injured in the shooting. The incident sparked a heavy debate about Baldwin’s culpability in the tragedy. Baldwin has continually insisted that he did not pull the gun’s trigger and it discharged without him touching it.
Already a prominent theme through the first episode, the second episode of The Baldwins showed Hilaria dive into detail about the depths of Baldwin’s grief. She told the camera, “I found these text messages the other day between us, you know, the day after…and [Baldwin] said he wanted to kill himself.”
She further emphasized Baldwin’s “survivor’s guilt,” saying, “You’re involved in this thing that nobody could even possibly imagine. And so he goes back to that day, he wishes it were him. He would change places [with Hutchins] in a second.”
“He’ll never be the same,” Hilaria continued. “This has affected his health and his mental health tremendously over the past few years. All of a sudden, he has started having heart problems. He’s been hospitalized multiple times.”
Hilaria’s confessional, along with Baldwins’ refusal to accept any culpability in the tragedy, has irked many of the show’s viewers, who question why the couple is so willing to explore and express the gravity of their own grief, without extending an apology to Hutchins’ family.
The Baldwins premiered on Feb. 23 on TLC and follows the couple and their seven children in New York City.
