Left-wing celebrity couple Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi moved to England after the election of Donald Trump to express their disappointment at the result.

The lesbian couple was reported to be househunting out of the country in November 2024, first considering a property in the English countryside, before “falling in love” with a farmhouse in the Cotswolds – an idyllic town known for its proximity to ancient architecture.

DeGeneres and de Rossi paid approximately $18 million for their new residence – $3 million over the asking price – which they intend to make their home base. Despite the couple’s excitement over their new home, their soon-to-be neighbors are reportedly not enthusiastic about their impending move.

De Rossi and DeGeneres have expanded the residence by a single-story extension, a hotly contested renovation due to increased flood risk and the possibility of disturbing historic Roman ruins roughly 200 meters from their property. British residents have voiced their concerns to the local parish council, requesting the renovation be denied.

However, a spokesperson for the West Oxfordshire District Council reported to the New York Post, “The works at the property involved a single-story extension and garden landscaping. Although the extension technically breached permitted development rights, it was considered acceptable in planning terms,” thus nullifying the neighbors’ objections.

The representative said, “As the works were completed to a high standard with no impact on surrounding amenities or other planning concerns, no further enforcement action was necessary, and the case has been closed.”

They added, “Regarding concerns about Roman remains on Akeman Street, the site is more than 200 meters away from the Roman road, and no interference was identified.”

Concerns about flood risk have not been addressed yet, and the hedge and wire fence surrounding the couple’s property seems likely to trap debris in the event of a flood, dangerously limiting water flow across the field.

Since the election, studies have shown that more than 1 in every 5 Americans (22%) is considering moving out of the country. Conveniently for those who don’t have a celebrity salary, Canada is officially offering asylum to Americans fleeing the country due to the well-founded fear of persecution.
