Meghan Markle reportedly ended her longtime friendship with British Vogue editor-in-chief Edward Enninful when he decided not to feature her on the cover of the magazine in 2022.

Since her wedding to Prince Harry in 2018, Markle has received multiple invitations for features from British Vogue. Enninful even, at one point, offered her the opportunity to appear on the cover for “Forces for Change,” British Vogue’s ongoing initiative to spotlight philanthropic individuals and promote progressive change. Markle, however, declined.

In 2022, Enninful supposedly planned to center Markle on the September edition of the magazine, with a piece spotlighting her charity work and her keynote appearance at the One Young World Summit in Manchester, England.

However, the feature was immediately nixed following a heated argument between the two when they were unable to agree on how to present Markle’s philanthropy.

An inside source told The Daily Mail, “The Duchess and her team had high expectations and were expecting she might get a print cover or at least a digital cover out of it, but Enninful was not able to meet those expectations…He already had a magazine cover in the bag for that month.”

The September 2022 British Vogue cover ended up going to the Canadian model Linda Evangelista, which marked her return to modeling after a lengthy hiatus.

Insiders at Condé Nast reported that Enninful and Markle’s friendship started to fall out after Markle and Prince Harry abandoned royal life in 2020 and moved to California. Following the September 2022 blow up, the two are reportedly no longer speaking to one another.

“Edward was furious to have lost the project, as were the powers that be at Condé Nast…the whole process became very difficult. Edward could only promise her a big showy feature inside the magazine and online – but she turned it down,” a source said.

The magazine’s higher-ups may have been reading popular opinion – Markle is the second least popular British royal, with only Prince Andrew scoring worse.

Vogue’s parent company, Condé Nast, has owned the fashion magazine since 1909.

Contrary to Condé Nast’s claims, sources told The New York Post that Enninful and Markle have maintained a “warm and respectful” relationship since the incident, with occasional contact, and sending birthday wishes accompanied by flowers in the last year.
